Dans les années 70, faisant la part belle aux musiques populaires, du rock au disco, et aux adaptations des grands spectacles de Broadway, le film musical retrouve un nouveau souffle. Sous l’impulsion de Bob Fosse, il abandonne une certaine frivolité n’hésitant pas à aborder des sujets graves comme la montée du nazisme (Cabaret), la finalité de l’existence (All that jazz) ou la guerre (Hair). Reflétant très souvent l’air du temps (La Fièvre du samedi soir, Grease), il s’oriente vers de nouvelles formes donnant naissance à de somptueux opéra-rock (Tommy) tout en flirtant avec le fantastique (Phantom of the Paradise) ou la parodie (The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Blues Brothers).

The Musical, as a genre, gets back into the spotlights in the 70's, through rock music, disco and the screen adaptations of Broadway shows. Under the influence of a Bob Fosse, frivolity is out and more serious topics are addressed, such as Nazism (Cabaret), life's finality (All That Jazz), or War (Hair). The Musical also experiments and gives birth to new subgenres, such as the Rock Opera (Tommy), and infiltrates Fantasy (Phantom of the Paradise) as well as Parody (The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Blues Brothers).
